Beginning in 1840 these ceramic discs were used as a base for compressed rouge with Dorin's original 27 Rue Grenier address.

The earliest traces of Dorin can often be found as curious, glazed, ceramic discs typically unearthed from city dumps in French, English, and American cities. At exactly 2 3/16” in diameter and ¼” thick these discs, bearing the Maison Dorin cipher ‘Fard de Toilette’ (literally, toilet make-up), are often mistaken as lids for cosmetic containers. They are, in fact, the bases on which powder and rouge were compressed and were the forerunners of the metal-compressed face powder discs that would be used in their hundreds of millions from about 1915 onwards. It is probably no coincidence that the American inventor William Kendall, who pioneered the design of pressed powder pads and cases in the United States, chose almost identical dimensions for his pads or discs as Dorin’s. Dorin had two sizes – about 2 1/4” and 1 1/4”, so did Kendall.
